WDA Award
The Walter D. Andrews, Sr. Award is given to any CWA Minority Caucus member that has demonstrated by their involvement the commitment to the areas of Organized Labor and Community.
Individuals can be nominated by writing a brief essay about the person and what they have done in the areas of Labor and Community in their careers. The essay should be no less than 500 words.
All properly received nominations then will be reviewed at that years’ conference by the WDA Award committee.
The name of the award winner will be announced at the Awards breakfast or Luncheon of the conference.

Walter Douglas Andrews, Sr. is a dedicated professional with a robust background in telecommunications and labor leadership, having devoted over 36 years to Bellsouth Telephone Company. He began his career in 1978 as a Toll Testing Technician, a role that evolved into the position of Electronic Technician. Walter's commitment to his field is complemented by extensive training and leadership roles within various labor organizations.
Throughout his career, Walter has been a significant figure in labor advocacy. Serving as President and other leadership roles within his Local 3204. In 2000 he was elected as the President of the CWA Minority Caucus , and held that position for 15 years before being appointed President Emeritus of both the CWA National Minority Caucus and CWA Local 3204.
His leadership contributions have earned him notable recognition, including the AFL-CIO Labor Leader of the Year award in 2008 and the Martin Luther King Medal of Freedom. Walter has also held various prestigious positions, such as Executive Vice President of the Georgia AFL-CIO and Honorary Grand Marshall for the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Rally.
Walter’s educational background includes graduating from Booker T. Washington High School and DeVry Institute of Technology. His skills extend beyond technical knowledge; he is known for being adaptable, a strong communicator, and a good listener.
A proud United States Air Force Veteran, he received an honorable discharge in 1969.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Walter values family life, having been married for 53 years to Rita North Andrews. He is a proud father of three sons and a grandfather of four.
His personal interests include athletic and mental sports, bowling, and fishing, and he actively engages in his community as Vice Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Zion Grove Baptist Church.
Walter's extraordinary commitment to his work, his family, and his community continues to shape a lasting legacy.
